LETTERS - PIPE DREAMS

The Letters / Pipe Dreams

Leith has always been known for spawning damn fine musical talent, and The Letters are no exception to this.

Pitching themselves as “5 piece Dark Cello pop noiseniks”, apparently “their sound emerges from lack of vitamin D, poorly heated flats and glittering pubs spread eagle-like across these northern streets”. We couldn’t have put it better ourselves.

They’re serving up their unique blend of cellostropic sounds at the forthcoming Wide Days event on 7th April, and you can even get a free ticket to their Sneaky Pete’s gig by emailing them at letters@widedays.com.

Freedom Fighter / Brave Little Note

Get this for a dreamy little electronic number, with some super layered vocals and a rogue violin thrown in for good measure. Feast yer ears.

For aficionados, Brave Little Note is Jacqueline Irvine, who’s based in Leith and can be soundstalked on Soundcloud, Facebook and on her very own minimalist website.

We like.

UPDATE: The “rogue violin” is in fact a rogue viola. Well done to all who spotted that. Just testing.

THE WAY by THE FUSILIERS (@pvtcvincent)

Pure brutal beef pop from Leith. Nuff said.

More curious types can seek out the lowdown on their rock n roll antics by stalking them on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace. And if you’re feeling flushed, dig out your pocket money for their wares on iTunes and for other releases on Never Too Early Records.

Then have a wee snigger at their early band look:

DEATH OF CITIES by THE WINTERGREENS

How an Icelandic, a Pole and a Czech ended up in a bedroom in Barony Street we’ll probably never know - but it’s here where they meticulously crafted the sound that’s making a few people sit up and take notice today, including us. The sound’s a bit of a strange beast. It’s ethereal and melodic in the same way as Mogwai, but this feels more foreboding. It’s definitely an acquired taste, but it’s definitely worth acquiring. Why not enquire about acquiring (yesss) at their Myspace - http://www.myspace.com/thewintergreens

Foxgang - Leith Walk

LEITH WALK by @FOXGANG

It seems only right for our first track of 2010 to feature a song about Leith, and you can’t get much better than one that involves getting showered in Red Bull.

From Leith, Glasgow and Poland, Foxgang have got the kind of upbeat, rockabilly style that can kickstart any year. Quirky lyrics, funky rhythms and Buckfast-fuelled live gigs make them a great excuse to dig yourself out the snow and see them in the flesh this January.

Check out live dates etc at the Foxgang MySpace page and download their music over at Foxgang on TenTracks.

“The way the play is outstanding, really brilliant music and always seem to have something different… The track ‘Leith Walk’ is quirky and lyrically strong. Foxgang is really a band for the future!”

WHISKY! by THE LAST BATTLE - @thelastbattle -

It was only a mere 3 months ago that edinburghs THE LAST BATTLE began writing, recording and rehearsing in each other’s front rooms. With some of them having never even played an instrument before let alone take to a stage, the 8-piece alt folksters have already played a handful of shows and are busy putting the finishing touches to their as-of-yet-untitled debut album. Recently drawing comparisons to a sweeter sounding Belle and Sebastian or Velvet Underground, through their boy/girl duets, sweeping cello and well arranged use of traditional instruments they create songs of death, love and longing.

And they’re also right here from Leith which earns them valuable bonus points.

SHAME by DISSIMILAR :

Dissimilar is an artistic collaboration between Alastair Cook (Leith based) and James Norton (London based), who together make music, video, art, sketches and live performances. As they put it themselves, their stuff is dark, mercurial and pretty intense.

This track Blind was recorded early one morning in East Ham after a stuttering journey through London’s outer reaches. It’s grim and downbeat, but captures that early morning cityscape glow. Catch more examples of their music, video and art on the Dissimilar site.

It’s also one of our first submissions direct from the artist. If you’ve got a band or track to feature on Leith Records, go ahead and suggest one here.
